Hafiz: Ghazal 98 "Catching Wind of Him" (From Persian)

Ghazal 98: Catching Wind of Him

Last night the wind at last brought wind of my wayfaring friend.
Now let what will be, be. I give my heart unto the wind.
My life has come to this: I've no companion in the end
Save lightning flashing every night, and every day, dawn wind.
Lost in your tangled locks my heart has never been chagrinned
Enough to cry "Oh for my home" while twisting in the wind.
Today I see my friends were right to advise that this love end.
Bless my advisers' souls, O Lord, for all that they intend.
My heart bleeds tears remembering you when on the meadowland
The budding rose's cloak is ripped wide open by the wind.
My fragile being languishes until I breathe the scent
That augurs your return, born hither on the dawning wind.
Hafiz your noble nature will achieve all you intend.
May lives be given to love all who give their hearts to the wind.

The Original:

In Tajik Cyrillic:

Romanization:

  2. Thank you for a great translation. Just one question, the recitation of the Persian was 59 sec and the recitation of the English version was 1.16 seconds. I found however the English recitation faster in tempo for some reason. Do you have any idea why the English seems (at least to me) to be faster?

  3. The English has more syllables, and the Persian relies on quantitative contrast whereas the English doesn't.
