Mahmoud Darwish: We Travel Like Anyone Else (From Arabic)

We Travel Like Anyone Else
Mahmoud Darwish

We travel like anyone else, but do not return to anything
         as if travelling
Were the way of the clouds. We buried our loved ones deep
in the shadow of the clouds and among the trunks of the trees.
We told our wives: bear our offspring for centuries,
that we may reach our journey's end and see
A moment of a country, a meter of what can't be.
In the carriages of the psalms we travel, in the tent of the prophets we sleep,
we come out of the words the gypsies speak.
We measure space with a hoopoe's beak
or sing to while the distance away or wash the moonlight clear.
Long is your path, so dream of seven women to bear this long path on
Your shoulders. Shake the palmtree for each one
to know her name and which shall be
the mother of the boy from Galilee.
Ours is a country of words. Speak, speak,
that I may lay my road on stone of stone to something.
Ours is a country of words. Speak speak
that we may know the end of this travelling.

Mahmoud Darwish: To My Mother (From Arabic)

To My Mother
By Mahmoud Darwish
Translated by A.Z. Foreman

Dearly I yearn for my mother's bread,
My mother's coffee,
Mother's brushing touch.
Childhood is raised in me,
Day upon day in me.
And I so cherish life
Because if I died
My mother's tears would shame me.

Set me, if I return one day,
As a shawl on your eyelashes, let your hand
Spread grass out over my bones,
Christened by your immaculate footsteps
Fasten us with a lock of hair,
With thread strung from the back of your dress.
I could become a god
A god is what I'd be
If I but touch your heart's deep breadth.

Set me, if ever I return,
In your oven as fuel to help you cook,
On your roof as a clothesline stretched in your hands.
Weak without your daily prayers,
I can no longer stand.

I am old
Give me back the stars of childhood
That I may chart the homeward quest
Back with the migrant birds,
Back to your awaiting nest.

Mahmoud Darwish: Passport (From Arabic)

Passport
By Mahmoud Darwish

They did not recognize me in the shadows
That suck my color out of the passport.
To them, the wound in me was an exhibit
For tourists collecting photographs for sport.
They did not recognize me. No . . . don't leave
My hand's palm with no sun, for trees in bloom

Do recognize me. Every song
Of the rain recognizes me.
Don't leave me pale like the moon!

All the birds that followed my palm
To the doors of the distant airport
All the wheatfields
All the prisons
All the white tombs
All the borders
All the waved handkerchiefs
All the eyes
Were with me,
But taken from my passport.

Stripped of my name and what I am?
On soil I worked with my own hands?
Today Job's cry

Filled all the sky:
Don't make another example of me!
Good prophets, my good sirs

Ask not the name of any tree.
Ask not the valley about its mother
From my brow bursts the sword of light
And from my hand springs the river's water...
The people's hearts are my identity.
Go, take my passport away from me.

Mahmoud Darwish: It is our right to love autumn (From Arabic)

It is our right to love autumn
By Mahmoud Darwish

We too have every right to love this autumn's
Last days and ask "is there room in the field
For a new fall? Where we can lie like coals?"
Autumn that downs the leaves in gold. If only
We were fig-leaves, or even neglected plants
To witness seasons' changing, oh if only
We had not said goodbye to the eyes' south
To ask our fathers what they asked themselves
When they went flying at the points of spears.
Poetry and the Lord's name in hope
Have mercy on us.
                               We, too, have the right
To warm the nights of lovely women, talk
Of what cuts short two strangers' night as they
Wait for the north to reach the compass. Autumn.
We have the right to smell the fragrance of
This autumn. The right to ask night for a dream.
Does a dream sicken as the dreamers do?
Fall. Autumn. Autumn. Can a people be
Born on the guillotine? We have the right
To meet whatever death we wish to meet.
Let the earth vanish in an ear of wheat.

Mahmoud Darwish: I am from there (From Arabic)

This poem ends by making innovative use of the technical linguistic terminology of the Arab grammarian tradition. It annoys me that the existing translations into English underplay or ignore this coolness.

I Am From There
By Mahmoud Darwish
Translated by A.Z. Foreman
Click here to hear me read the poem in Arabic

I am from there and I have memories. Like any other
Man I was born. I have a mother,
A house with several windows, friends and brothers.
I have a prison cell's cold window, a wave
Snatched by seagulls, my own view, an extra blade
Of grass, a moon at word's end, a supply
Of birds, and an olive tree that cannot die.
I walked across the land before the crossing
Of swords made a banquet-table of a body.

I come from there, and I return the sky
To its mother when it cries for her, and cry
For a cloud on its return
To recognize me. I have learned
All words befitting of blood's court to break
The rule; I have learned all the words to take
The lexicon apart for one noun's sake,
The compound I must make:
Homeland.
