Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff: Forest Conversation (From German)

Forest Conversation
Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff
Translated by A.Z. Foreman

It's late and cold. The light is gone.
So why ride through these woods alone?
The woods are vast. I'll be your guide
And help you home, you pretty bride."

"Great are men's lies and trickery.
They broke my heart in agony.
The hunter's bugle echoes round.
Oh flee. You don't know whom you've found."

Lady and horse, richly adorned.
Young body, marvelously formed.
I know you now. Dear God on high!
You are that witch, the Lorelei.

"Know me indeed! That tower is mine
That looks out deep into the Rhine.
It's late and cold. The light is gone.
Your life outside these woods is done."

O flieh!

"Du kennst mich wohl - von hohem Stein
Schaut still mein Schloß tief in den Rhein.
